PERSONALIZED D'VAR TORAH WRITING AND COACHING FOR B'NAI MITZVAH STUDENTS

Mazel Tov! Now, about that D’var Torah…

Your child is approaching an incredible milestone: becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. It’s a time for celebration, pride, a little Shehecheyanu and, if we’re being honest, a fair amount of stress.

I know because I’ve been there.

After coming out the other side of my son’s Bar Mitzvah in June 2026, I finally understood why a friend once described the experience as “hosting a festival.” It’s usually not just one day. There are Shabbat gatherings, luncheons after the ceremony and, of course, the best part: the party! It’s up to you to plan all those events. Emphasis on the plural.

Leading up to all that are Hebrew lessons and Torah practice, meetings and mitzvah projects, invitations and celebrations…and somewhere in the middle of all of that, your middle schooler is expected to write a thoughtful, meaningful D’var Torah and deliver it in front of everyone they know.

No pressure.

That’s where The Spiel Specialist comes in.

The D’var Torah is one of my favorite parts of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah because it gives us something the rest of the service can’t: a window into who this young person is right now.

It’s an opportunity for your child to take an ancient text, discover something meaningful within it and connect it to their own experiences, values, personality and emerging Jewish identity.

The dilemma? The average 12- or 13-year-old isn’t exactly accustomed to writing a lengthy, thoughtful speech that combines Torah interpretation, personal reflection, storytelling and just the right amount of vulnerability.

The ideas are usually in there. Sometimes they just need a little help getting them out.

More than an editor

Synagogue clergy and educators provide invaluable guidance as our children prepare to become B’nai Mitzvah. But their time with each student is understandably limited.

You might be thinking, “Well, AI can assist and fill in the gaps.” Could AI write your child’s D’var Torah? Probably. But can it uncover the things your child actually wants to say?

That’s where I come in.

My role is different.

As your child’s personal D’var Torah writing coach, I take the time to get to know them: what they care about, what makes them laugh, what they’ve experienced and what makes them them.

Whenever possible, I like that relationship to begin face-to-face. For Houston-area families, I prefer our first meeting to happen in person, especially for students choosing the All In package. Virtual meetings are always available, but I’ve found there’s something about human connection that can’t quite be replicated through a screen.

That first meeting isn’t just about Torah or writing. Sometimes the heart of a D’var Torah emerges from an unexpected comment or story that, at first, seems to have nothing to do with the Torah portion at all.

I want your child to feel comfortable talking, thinking, laughing and opening up a little. Because when we’re asking a 12- or 13-year-old to write something this personal, having another human sitting across from them – listening, asking questions and genuinely being interested in what they have to say – it can make all the difference.

Together, we’ll explore their Torah portion, identify themes that truly resonate with them and find the connections between an ancient story and their very modern life.

Then we’ll turn those ideas into a D’var Torah that is thoughtful, cohesive and engaging. Most importantly, it will still sound like your child.

This isn’t about writing the speech for them. It’s about helping them discover what they want to say and giving them the tools and guidance to say it well.
